Frequent Questions

Parents' Frequent Questions

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has prepared responses to the following questions asked most frequently by parents.

Q. How are children evaluated?
A. The evaluation is different based on each child's needs. The first visit is with a doctor specializing in developmental and behavioral issues who will meet with you and your child. After the doctor reviews information you have provided, asks you questions about your concerns and your child's medical history, and observes and examines your child, you will decide together what additional information is needed to answer your questions. Usually more testing is recommended.

Q. What kinds of testing will my child need?
A. Each child is different. More information may be needed to assess your child's needs in movement, learning, speech, or related behaviors. Some medical tests and lab work may also provide helpful information. You and the doctor will decide together.

Q. When will I know the results of the evaluation?
A. We know many families would like answers at their first visit as they have already been anxiously waiting. We may not have all the information we need at that first visit to give a specific diagnosis, but we will share with you our initial thoughts so we can decide together what steps are needed to identify and address your issues and concerns.  After all of the testing is completed, you will typically meet with your doctor to discuss the results and recommendations. It is up to you on whether your child should attend that discussion.

Q. Am I the person who must bring my child to DDBP or can another relative bring my child?
A. A parent or legal guardian must bring the child who is a minor to the appointment to sign the consent form for evaluation and treatment. You also have the most helpful information about your child so it is best if the parent is present for the entire appointment. If another person has to bring your child, we will need to talk with you on the phone before we can see your child.  Please make sure that the person bringing your child has number where you can be reached at the time of the appointment.

Q. Where is DDBP?
A. DDBP is located at Cincinnati Children's main campus in location E on the second floor. Free parking is available in the visitors' garage. The location E parking section is closest to the clinic, but staff at Welcome Centers inside any location can direct you to DDBP. Bring your parking ticket inside to get it stamped.
