How Can You Protect Yourself Against Carbon Monoxide?
Install carbon monoxide detectors as a first line of defense against poisoning. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends installing at least one carbon monoxide detector with an audible alarm near the sleeping areas in every home. Additional detectors on every level and in every bedroom can provide extra protection.
Within the tri-state area carbon monoxide detectors may be purchased at local hardware stores. Detectors may be electric, battery operated, or electric with a battery back-up. Manufacturers of carbon monoxide detectors include First Alert", American Sensors and Kidde Safety Nighthawk. Prices range from approximately $30-$50 per unit.
Have a qualified professional check all connections to flue pipes and venting systems for cracks. gaps, rust, corrosion or debris to be sure exhaust gases can escape from the home properly. The local yellow pages lists professionals under "Chimney Builders and Repairers/Cleaning". Check your chimney and flue regularly.
Have all fuel burning appliances checked. Look at the color of gas burner flames and pilot lights. A yellow-colored flame indicates the fuel isn't burning efficiently and could be releasing a higher than usual amount of carbon monoxide. Maintenance may be required.
Never leave a car running in an attached garage, even if the garage door is open. Never use charcoal grills inside the home, outside an open window, or in an attached garage, even if the door is open. Never use a gas range or oven or gas / oil space heaters to heat your living quarters.
Your local fire department or the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company (Cinergy), 513-651-4466, will come to your home and check for carbon monoxide if you suspect a problem. Both services are free.
