Drug Paraphernalia
The Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), located at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, provides timely information about drugs and related issues.
There is a whole set of drug paraphernalia not previously seen on the drug scene that is commonly associated with raves. Many of the items look innocent enough, and unless someone is educated as to how these things enhance the high effects of the drugs used, they often get passed over as nothing of importance.
A raver will frequently carry a backpack or some other carryall to transport their paraphernalia. The following is a list of objects and their use with regard to the drug scene:
- Skittles" or packs of M&M"'s: backs of packs are slit, filled with ecstasy tablets and resealed for sale.
- Chem-Lights: allow for enhanced visual stimulation for a psychedelic effect.
- Nasal inhalers and chest rubs with strong smells: inhaled while under the influence of ecstasy to heighten its effect. The chest rub is put under the nose, on the upper lip, or put into a surgical mask and passed around on the dance floor.
- Bottle of bubbles, 35-mm film canister: types of containers used to transport GHB.
- Tootsie Roll"'s: melted and ecstasy is then placed in the candy and it's rolled back up and sold.
- Baby's pacifier and Blow Pop"'s: used to combat some of the side effects of ecstasy, such as the involuntary biting of the tongue and grinding of teeth.
- Energy pills: usually caffeine, used as a substitute for ecstasy when it cannot be obtained.
- Gum: hits of acid are placed on gum pieces and then sold with wrapper put back on.
- Surgical mask: smeared inside with chest rub and placed over nose and mouth to breath contents; passed around on the dance floor to enhance the effects of ecstasy or other stimulants in relation to the music and lights.
