Flovent Inhaler Treatment for Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Question: My child was prescribed swallowed Flovent for his / her eosinophilic esophagitis. How should this medication be administered?

Answer:

We recommend the following for administering swallowed flovent for the treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis:

  • Shake the inhaler well for 15 seconds immediately before each use.
  • Remove the cap from the mouthpiece.
  • Breathe out through your mouth, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it.
  • Hold your breath, then press down firmly and fully on the top of the metal canister.
  • Swallow.
  • Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 3-5, if necessary.
  • Replace the mouthpiece cap after each use.
  • Do not rinse out your mouth or eat or drink for 30-45 minutes following each use so the medication is not rinsed out of the esophagus. This differs from the instructions included with the inhaler which are designed for inhalational use.
  • Discard the canister after you have used the labeled number of inhalations. The canister may not sound empty due to the extra propellant included. Each inhaler typically contains 120 puffs, and will last for 30 days using 4 puffs per day.
