Elemental Diet

The Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders (CCED) at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides information for patients and families on the elemental diet.

What Is an Elemental Diet?

An elemental diet is as a highly specialized, nutritionally complete, hypoallergenic formula. They are referred to as "elemental formulas" or "amino acid-based formulas" because the protein in the formula is present as amino acids rather than intact protein.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein that are used by the body after digestion of protein. Allergic reactions develop against intact or partially broken down protein, but not to amino acids.

Elemental formulas provide all the calories, vitamins and minerals needed if they are taken in the recommended amounts.
