Our Mission
The mission of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Cincinnati Children's is to provide the highest-quality clinical care and neurophysiology for children with epilepsy; conduct research into the pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety of investigational and marketed anticonvulsant drugs; and provide educational programs and materials for professionals and families.
Research
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program team has extensive experience in the medical, surgical and dietary treatment of children with epilepsy. Over the past ten years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Cincinnati Children's a master agreement, a clinical contract and a four-year grant for the study of antiepileptic drugs in various clinical situations. Currently, our program cooperates with Indiana University in an ongoing NIH grant investigating children with new onset seizures.
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program has conducted over 25 industry-sponsored clinical trials of investigational antiepileptic drugs involving over 250 patients. Clinical trials performed have included medications such as felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, topiramate, oxcarbazepine, zonisamide and levetiracetam.
We have continued to expand services in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Division, both in the evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery and the placement of the Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS). Over 70 patients with the VNS implant are now followed by the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program medical team. We also have an active ketogenic diet program with over 30 children currently on the diet.
