Research Emphasis
Areas of research emphasis include:
- Respiratory diseases (influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, common cold, pneumococcal pneumonia)
- Diarrheal diseases (rotavirus, bacterial)
- Hepatitis A, B, C, D
- Herpes viral diseases (gential herpes, cold sores, shingles, cytomegalovirus)
- Rash diseases (rubella, measles, 5th disease)
- Enteroviral diseases and pertussis (whooping cough)
- Microbicides
- Sexually transmitted diseases
Vaccine research has included clinical evaluations in all age groups (infants to elderly). Specific vaccines include:
- Rubella
- Measles
- Mumps
- Influenza
- Cytomegalovirus (inactivated and live-attenuated)
- Herpes type 1 and 2
- Rotavirus
- Acellular pertussis
- New combinations of childhood vaccines
The Gamble Program was instrumental in obtaining licenses for rubella, rubella-measles-mumps and influenza vaccines. The program has patent rights to a rotavirus vaccine, and has played a major role in evaluation of the rotavirus vaccine which was licensed in 1998.
Antiviral drug research has included evaluation of agents for:
- Influenza
- Common cold
- Herpes diseases
- Enteroviruses
These studies have involved natural and experimental viral challenges.
Over the years, the Gamble Program has been well funded. Current funding includes an NIH VTEU (vaccine treatment and evaluation unit) contract, an NIH antiviral contract, and numerous industrial sponsors.
