Explanation

Beyond Nutrition Counseling: Reframing the Battle Against Obesity, developed by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center through a research collaboration between Cincinnati Children's and the Kentucky WIC Program, addresses both the prevention and management of childhood obesity.

The video may be used alone or in conjunction with a facilitated group discussion (FGD) as an intervention to alter the perceptions of WIC health professionals about the problem of childhood obesity.

To measure any changes in perception resulting from this intervention, you may choose to use the evaluation tools described below. These tools were used by Kentucky Fit WIC in its formal evaluation of the intervention and can be modified to suit your specific needs.

We suggest that the evaluation instruments be completed anonymously to encourage participants to answer as honestly as possible.

Demographic Questionnaire

The Demographic Questionnaire consists of 13 items and is particularly useful in large training sessions to gather information about the characteristics of the participants, such as race, age, perceived self-efficacy in counseling, self-reported height and weight, professional certification and WIC counseling experience. Some or all of these participant characteristics may affect how responsive the participants are to the intervention.

Based on your own experience, the FGD may need to be tailored to make the intervention more successful with certain groups.

Assessment Form

The Assessment Form consists of two open-ended questions. The first question is designed to assess the FGD participant's perceptions about barriers to obesity prevention in WIC. The second question is designed to assess the FGD participant's perceptions about possible solutions to overcoming these barriers.

The FGD participants are asked at three different time points during the FGD to write their responses to these same two questions (before video, after video and after discussion). At each time point, the participants should be given a different color pen to record their responses on the Assessment Form:

  • Blue = Before video
  • Red = After video
  • Green = After FGD

By using different colored pens, distributed and collected at each assessment time, you can distinguish the responses at different time points. In addition, this method will allow the participants to add new or modified responses without editing the actual responses from the prior assessment(s).

Follow-up Questionnaire

The Follow-up Questionnaire is designed to determine how successful the WIC health professionals feel they have been in implementing any of the counseling strategies suggested during the FGD and what further training might be most helpful to these WIC health professionals. It is to be mailed to participants 4-6 weeks after the FGD.
