Generalist Inpatient Service

Inpatient Consultation

The goal of Generalist Inpatient Services (GIS) at Cincinnati Children's is to provide excellent service

The goal of Generalist Inpatient Services (GIS) at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is to provide excellent service to patients, families and their referring physicians. The input, expertise and professional cooperation of the referring physician are highly valued by the GIS physicians. The GIS is also designed to provide well coordinated and communicated transitions between the referring physician's office and the hospital.

The referring community physician will be called at a minimum within 24 hours of admission and at the time of discharge. More frequent calls will be made if there are significant clinical changes or at the request of the referring physician. A copy of the Discharge Summary is also faxed to the referring physician at the time of discharge.

Participation in GIS is entirely optional. Community physicians may admit patients to their own services, but the GIS is available to those physicians who chose to do so for geographic, vacation or other reasons. The decision to admit to the GIS does not impact a physician's attending status at Cincinnati Children's.

Community physicians who wish to sign up with the GIS may do so by calling program director, Michael T. Vossmeyer, MD. Then, when their patients are admitted to Cincinnati Children's, they will automatically be placed on GIS whether they have been referred or not.

GIS and Specialty Units

Patients who are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Regional Center for Newborn Intensive Care (RCNIC) are under the care of the respective physicians of these units. Similarly, GIS patients who are admitted to subspecialty services are under the care of the subspecialty attending physician. Communication occurs between these physicians and the referring physician.

When the patient is transferred to a general pediatric unit, the GIS physician assumes responsibility for the care of the patient.
