Pediatric Oncology (cancer treatment)
Pediatric surgeons in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center work closely with the physicians in the Division of Hematology / Oncology to:
- Establish tumor diagnosis
- Assess the stage of a tumor (how far it has spread)
- Plan the appropriate therapy (surgery, chemotherapy and / or radiation)
- Plan the proper timing of surgery
Together with pediatric medical oncologists, they manage children with solid tumors, including:
Pediatric surgeons also perform surgery to place central venous lines or ports. These devices are implanted under the skin, enabling chemotherapy to be given in a less painful and more effective way.
