The Heart Institute team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is comprised of high-caliber cardiac specialists focused on improving health. Jeffrey Towbin, MD, director of Cardiology and co-director of the Heart Institute, Jeffrey Robbins, PhD, director of Molecular Cardiovascular Biology and co-director of the Heart Institute, and Peter B. Manning, MD, director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, have attracted a world-class team of researchers, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, as well as pediatric intensivists, anesthesiologists, nurses and other professionals to create a dynamic center of excellence.
Our interdisciplinary team approach means the best minds in all of the fields who contribute to pediatric heart medicine come together to combine their expertise and experience in caring for our patients.
Extensive Cardiac Expertise
The Heart Institute team's skills and capabilities make us foremost in the field:
- Every year more than 10,000 families from around the world are referred by their physicians to Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute.
- Skilled specialists provide outstanding pediatric cardiac care to more than 900 inpatient children and see 10,000 outpatient visits annually.
- Our expertise enables us to care for the youngest of children. More than 60 percent of our surgical patients are under 1 year of age.
- With access to the most sophisticated technology, our experienced team has achieved outcomes that rival or surpass those at other top centers, even the most challenging cases.
- Our surgeons perform more than 400 heart operations each year including more than 260 open-heart procedures.
- For the last five years, 26 percent of surgeries are performed on infants under 1 month of age. Approximately 75 percent of surgeries are performed on children during the first year of life.
- Our survival rate for arterial switch for newborn transposition is greater than 96 percent.

Our team members are highly regarded by other health care providers nationally and internationally, positioning the Heart Institute as a leader in pediatric cardiac care, research and education.
We offer team-oriented, interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment for the full spectrum of pediatric cardiac problems. Among the best trained in their fields, we are board certified in not just one, but in as many as three and four areas related to pediatric heart care. A number are acclaimed pioneers of procedures that have changed heart care across the nation, including catheter interventions and echocardiography in congenital heart disease.
