Preparation for Surgery

If your child is scheduled for surgery at the Heart Institute, it is necessary to perform a preoperative evaluation prior to the operation. Unless your child is ill, it's not necessary to make a pre-op appointment to see your pediatrician or family doctor. All of the preoperative evaluation will be done at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

These steps will help ensure the best possible comfort and convenience in completing the preoperative evaluation:

  1. Park in the Visitor's Parking Garage at Cincinnati Children's Burnet Campus. Bring your parking ticket to your appointment so it can be validated.
  2. At 10 am, arrive at the Test Referral Center for blood work. It is on the first floor of Location A.
  3. Next, go to the X-ray (Radiology) Department for a chest X-ray. It is on the first floor of Location B.
  4. Finally, go to the Same Day Surgery Department on the third floor of Location B.

Here your child will have an abbreviated physical exam and an EKG. In addition, our cardiothoracic nurse practitioner will talk to you about the details of the surgery and tell you what time to be here on the day of surgery. You also will meet with the anesthesiologist.
