Family Advisory Committee

Improving Patient Experiences

In support of an ongoing commitment to be a national leader in family-centered care, the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has formed a Family Advisory Committee with a goal of improving clinical outcomes and patient experiences from the family’s perspective.

The essence of family-centered care is the belief that health care providers and the family are partners, working together to best meet the needs of the child. Modeled after the Cincinnati Children’s Family Advisory Council, which is a forum for feedback and influence from parents across the entire organization, the Heart Institute Family Advisory Committee meets monthly and is facilitated by two clinical leaders from the Heart Institute.

Building Friendlier Systems

Staff from both inpatient and outpatient units are represented in the forum to receive input from parents and help implement feedback. The committee is evolving toward the objective of being co-led by parents of children with heart disease treated at Cincinnati Children’s.

The Family Advisory Committee at the Heart Institute is integral to the planning of a yearly summer picnic, the annual Family Retreat Weekend and a week-long summer camp for kids with heart conditions, Camp Joyful Hearts. Members of the committee are actively involved in forming foundations, fundraising for cardiac research and providing gifts for children treated at the Heart Institute.

Due to its commitment to family-centered care, Cincinnati Children’s received the 2008 Picker Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Patient-Centered Care.
