World-Class Institution

James P. Spaeth, MD, Director, Cardiac Anesthesia

Meet Our Team

The Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is home to one of the nation’s most experienced teams dedicated exclusively to clinical care, education and research in pediatric cardiovascular anesthesia. Under the direction of James P. Spaeth, MD, a staff of seven anesthesiologists combine to deliver more than 80 years of experience in pediatric cardiovascular anesthesia.

More than 10 years ago the Cincinnati Children's Department of Anesthesia developed a team of pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists with the goal of delivering the best possible care for cardiac patients undergoing procedures in the operating room and cardiac catheterization suites.

Today, our award-winning staff of pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists is published internationally and lectures frequently at national conferences.

Center Of Excellence

The Heart Institute brings together cardiac surgeons with dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists – assisted by fellows and nurse practitioners – in a closely orchestrated team approach designed to address the most complex cases and the complications that come with treating the sickest children.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery performs nearly 400 cardiac operations per year;  approximately 250 are open-heart surgeries. Approximately 25 percent of the patients treated by the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery are under a month of age and 60 percent are under one year of age.

Cincinnati Children's consistently ranks as one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” survey, and in 2008 was ranked eighth in heart and cardiothoracic surgical care.

Collaborative Research

The integrated structure of the Heart Institute enables a series of research projects to be developed between the anesthesiology team, Cincinnati Children's pioneering cardiac catheterization laboratory and our nationally ranked cardiac intensive care unit. The anesthesiology team is currently leading research that is exploring new technologies which monitor tissue and brain oxygenation.
