Cardiothoracic Surgery
The vision of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center – a tightly integrated component of the Heart Institute – is to be a national and international leader in pediatric cardiothoracic surgical care, surgical research and teaching.
We focus on complete corrections in the newborn period, management of complex single ventricle cardiac anomalies and techniques to limit transfusion exposures. The program has the capability of performing all levels of open and closed heart surgeries including cardiac transplantation and the ability to perform ECMO support. The Heart Institute’s structure at Cincinnati Children’s is designed to combine the talents of many cardiac medical and surgical specialists working together as a cohesive team along with nurses, technical and support staff, and administration.
Extensive Expertise
The Heart Institute has attracted a world-class team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons as well as pediatric intensivists, anesthesiologists, nurses and other professionals to create a dynamic center of excellence. Our surgeons perform nearly 400 heart operations each year including approximately 250 open-heart procedures.
Innovative Research
Research in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery is a vital part of the Heart Institute's mission of speeding innovative medicine from bench to bedside. Our research lab has generated a number of publications in peer review journals as well as presentations at national meetings, and has earned a number of grants from National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.
Cincinnati Children's consistently ranks as one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News' annual “America’s Best Children's Hospitals” survey, and in 2009 was ranked ninth in heart care and heart surgery.
