Pioneering Research
Integrated Approach Opens New Pathways
| Changing the Outcome |
"The time has come for such an undertaking. Historically, medical centers have hired the best and brightest clinical staff and researchers, but have not provided them with a structure that encourages them to share their ideas and findings with one another. Despite the best intentions, barriers persist between the basic science and clinical communities. Each has hired its own fellows who, in turn, have been trained to work in and perpetuate a silo of clinical practice or basic research. This has to change. It is only with nationally and internationally known clinicians and researchers interacting on a daily basis that we can create the environment necessary for ‘changing the outcome.' "

The Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center – established July 1, 2008 – underscores Cincinnati Children’s commitment to fully integrate outstanding clinical care and groundbreaking research capabilities into a partnership that allows us to more rapidly develop new and increasingly effective treatments for children with heart disease.
The Heart Institute structure brings physicians, nurses and other clinical staff together with basic, clinical, translational and outcomes research teams to change the way we think about and treat pediatric heart disease. At Cincinnati Children’s we are pioneering pediatric heart medicine by merging the diverse missions of clinical care, research, education, process improvement / outcomes and operations, bringing each of these critical parts into full strategic alignment. Interacting on a daily basis and sharing one another’s unique perspectives within the Heart Institute structure will result in defining new disease pathways and developing novel treatments for pediatric cardiovascular disease.
Cincinnati Children’s has world-class efforts underway in basic science and clinical practice in pediatric heart disease. Our clinical program is nationally ranked in the Top 10 and our group of basic scientists is unique in the world of academic pediatric cardiology.
From Bench To Bedside
Our basic, clinical, translational and outcomes research groups work closely together. Led by Woody Benson, MD, PhD, our clinical and basic research teams recently competed successfully in a national competition for one of the five Specialized Center for Clinically Oriented Research grants from the National Institutes of Health. Jeffery Molkentin, PhD, is one of 50 new Investigators named by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for his pioneering work on cardiac and muscle disease.

The Heart Institute fosters their collaboration, provides critical infrastructure and encourages the exchange of information between the bench and the bedside.
These interactions are also crucial to fulfilling our mission of educating the next generation. The basic and clinical research fellows who train at the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s will be the best and the brightest researchers and clinicians. These talented women and men will propagate our vision of transforming pediatric health care across the nation. The multidisciplinary approach of the Heart Institute underscores Cincinnati Children’s commitment to be the leader in improving the health of future generations.
