Fetal Heart Program

Fetal Echo Studies by Year
Cincinnati Children's fetal echo studies, graphed by year

The Fetal Heart Program is an integral part of the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and is composed of a comprehensive health care team offering state-of-the-art diagnosis and care — both medical and surgical.

The Fetal Heart Program partners with the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati to provide the only comprehensive center in the Midwest for fetal evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. A collaboration of Cincinnati Children's, The University Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati is one of very few centers in the world affiliated with a top children’s hospital, two Level III maternity hospitals and three Level III newborn intensive care units.

Directed by Erik Michelfelder, MD, the Fetal Heart Program is dedicated to providing exemplary care to the fetus diagnosed with structural or functional heart disease and to supporting the fetus and expectant family in a compassionate, comprehensive manner. Conditions treated include: structural heart disease, fetal arrhythmias and fetal cardiac dysfunction.

Optimal Care for the Smallest Hearts

The Fetal Heart Program team at Cincinnati Children's performs more than 1,000 fetal cardiac evaluations annually and approximately 7,000 cardiac laboratory exams. This background in cardiac imaging allows each family who is seen by our experts to receive a comprehensive fetal cardiac evaluation, including a detailed plan and recommendations for future care to both the referring physician and the family.

Once diagnosed, fetal heart problems are managed within the Fetal Heart Program through an interdisciplinary approach. Parents and referring physicians consult with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, neonatologists, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists to ensure care planning and management of the fetus with heart disease is at the highest level. We also offer prenatal genetic counseling and interaction with specialized cardiac nurses.

The Fetal Heart team provides:

  • Family-centered care
  • Multiple resources for counseling and educating families
  • Detailed information to optimize diagnosis
  • Help with birth planning and postnatal management of the newborn
