The Abnormal Weight Gain Clinic at the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is a joint effort of the Comprehensive Weight Management Center and the Division of Endocrinology. Patients referred to Abnormal Weight Gain Clinic receive a full evaluation by a pediatrician with expertise in weight management. This clinic is for children and adolescents younger than 19 who have experienced unusual and unexplained weight gain.
The Abnormal Weight Gain Clinic:
- Looks for the underlying causes of a child’s abnormal weight gain
- Determines whether there are medical problems causing or contributing to the weight gain
- Develops an individualized plan to help the young person manage his or her weight and resolve any related medical issues
The Abnormal Weight Gain Clinic team might refer a young person to one or more of our affiliated programs, depending on the findings of the evaluation. Affiliated programs include the Diabetes Center, Hypertension Clinic, Lipid Clinic, Sleep Disorders Center and others.
Clinic Pinpoints Underlying Causes of Abnormal Weight Gain
- First, your child will have a thorough clinical evaluation by one of our physicians, including a detailed health history to look for any weight-related health problems.
- Lab tests will be conducted before or at this appointment to look for health problems.Your child must be fasting (without food or drink) for these labs.
- Based on what the clinical evaluation finds, the team will counsel you and your child about the causes of the abnormal weight gain and any associated medical problems.
- We develop a program tailored to your child’s individual health situation and needs, including diet, exercise and further testing.
- We will work with you to outline community and other resources that may be helpful to you and your child.
