Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic

Specialized Clinic for Adults

"In a sense, because these patients have congenital problems, we at Cincinnati Children's have a better appreciation of these issues. The question is: 'Where do I go?' At this juncture, Cincinnati Children's is the best place to go."

Richard Meyer, MD, Director, Adult Congenital Heart Clinic

The Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers a specialized clinic for adult congenital heart disease – treating those over 21 who were born with heart defects.

One-of-a-Kind Clinic

At Cincinnati Children's we have treated patients as old as 84, although most of our patients are between 20 and 50 years old. The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic is one of the first of its kind in the country, formed in 1990, and we see nearly 2,000 patients over the age of 17 in our clinics annually. The clinic holds convenient evening hours to accommodate working schedules.

The most important thing for adults born with a heart defect is to see physicians who are specially trained in this field, as in many cases the adult cardiology community does not encounter the rare conditions adult congenital heart disease often presents.

Adults With Congenital Heart Disease

At present there are 800,000 to 1 million adult patients in the country with adult congenital heart disease. By the year 2020, the anticipated number of patients with the condition will be more than 1.2 million people. Cincinnati Children's is and will remain a national leader in helping educate cardiac care physicians in the adult community to better understand the special issues that these patients face.

At Cincinnati Children's patients with adult congenital heart disease receive the best possible care through a full-time staff and state-of-the-art technology.
