Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Diagnostic Catheterization
  • After a procedure in the hybrid catheterization laboratory, Russel Hirsch, MD, director of Cardiac Catheterization, reviews fluoroscopic images in the lab's control booth.
  • Opening of the hybrid catheterization lab at Cincinnati Children's makes it possible to combine catheterization and surgery in one procedure, in one setting.

The Hybrid Catheterization Laboratory at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center combines the best elements of the operating room with the state-of-the-art imaging technology necessary for cardiac catheterization--all in one location.

Safe Care

Consistent with our family-centered care initiative, the ultimate purpose of this facility is to provide the best and safest care to children with complex cardiac conditions, while minimizing the total number of procedures or interventions they may require.

The rooms fulfill all the requirements of an operating room such as sterility, cleanliness and space for equipment needs, while functioning at the same time as a catheterization room. This dual functionality provides our physicians with the ideal facility to successfully treat the many patients who require simultaneous catheterization and surgery.

Crossover Procedures

The hybrid suite is also able to offer crossover procedures – moving from a catheterization procedure to a surgical procedure – in the event a catheterization procedure is not successful. An example of this would be a child with a particularly large atrial septal defect. In the event closure of the defect with a device placed by the catheter is not successful, the surgical team can immediately take over without the child having to undergo general anesthesia at another time. This allows the defect to be closed surgically during the same case.

Treating Newborns with Complex Heart Disease

The suite is enormously useful for treating newborn infants with complex heart disease. When an intitial diagnosis is not certain based on non-invasive imaging (such as echocardiography, CT scans or MRI), further invasive angiography is required to define anatomy. Under these circumstances, the diagnostic procedure, performed by cardiac catheterization, can be combined with surgical repair at the same time.

Highly Trained Staff

The hybrid suite is staffed by full-time catheterization physicians and served by full-time registered nursing staff with intensive care training.
