Cardiac Catheterization Program

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Catheterization

The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are located in A.6, in the midst of the in-patient cardiology ward and close to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. This facilitates family-centered care and adds substantially to the convenience of the families of our children. Currently, more than 600 cardiac catheterizations are completed on an annual basis.

The Cardiac Catheterization service performs diagnostic and therapeutic catheterization in a newly redesigned and rebuilt hybrid catheterization suite. Thus, apart from routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, the catheterization suite is also used to perform simultaneous surgery and catheterization procedures on selected patients when necessary.

Some of the therapeutic procedures offered include (but are not exclusive of):

The two Cardiac Catheterization rooms are central to a Heart Center-wide communication network. The digital angiograms and all other vital data produced during a procedure can be viewed in real-time at multiple locations around the medical center, including the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Cardio-Thoracic operating rooms. This allows immediate important opinions to be sought in the midst of a catheterization if necessary, and adds greatly to the safety of our patients during procedures.
