Heart Clinical Care Programs

Preventive Cardiology Program

The Preventive Cardiology Program, part of the interdisciplinary Heart Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is clinically active and has a strong academic component with over $1.5 million of extramural funding each year.

Preventive Cardiology focuses on the factors that increase the risk of developing heart disease, not only as children, but also in adults. Many adults who develop heart disease are at risk for this because of problems identifiable in childhood. Modification of these risk factors in childhood may have the most significant impact on changing the chances for developing cardiac problems as adults. The clinical programs include the pediatric lipid clinic, the hypertension clinic, and the HealthWorks! weight management clinic.

Preventive Cardiology research focuses on the epidemiology of pediatric obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Elaine M. Urbina, MD, is the Director of the Preventive Cardiology Program.
