Heart Clinical Care Programs

Heart Transplant

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center was one of the first centers in the world to perform pediatric heart transplantation. The Heart Transplant Program, part of the interdisciplinary Heart Center at Cincinnati Children's, was officially established in 1986.

Our team of cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists with special interest and expertise in transplantation has revitalized a previously small but successful program.

Infants and children with specific congenital heart lesions, cardiomyopathy or cardiac tumors are the primary candidates for transplantation.

The program is UNOS approved and a member of the Ohio Solid Organ Transplantation Consortium. In addition, the transplant team members are active participants in the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study Center and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. There is a very close clinical and academic relationship with the University of Cincinnati Adult Heart Transplant and Heart Failure Programs.

Areas of Emphasis

  • To provide children with untreatable heart disease a chance to be active, participating members of their families and communities, and the chance to grow, emotionally and physically, with as little limitation as possible.
  • Multidisciplinary care from a well-established, nationally recognized cardiology service, cardiothoracic surgeons, nurse practitioners, and support professionals
  • To enhance the scope of management of children with complex cardiac disease from palliation to complete correction to heart replacement.

The experience of our clinical team and our commitment to quality long-term management are hallmark strengths of our Heart Transplant Program.

Clinical Guidelines
