Preoperative Teaching Program
The Same Day Surgery preoperative teaching program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a 45 to 60 minute program to help prepare a child and family for simple surgeries. The program consists of a tour of the preoperative exam room, the induction room, the operating room and the recovery room. Medical play (play with different equipment that patients may see the day of surgery) is done throughout the program, and a question and answer session is provided for adults.
Because much of this tour is not experienced by our cardiac patients, The Heart Center child life specialists can give patients and families individual tours of Same Day Surgery, CICU and the Cardiology floor. These tours can be set up on your clinic day or preadmission testing day.
Some parents are fearful that the tours will make their child more anxious. Studies have shown that both children and their families are less anxious when they are prepared for their operation. We encourage families to be honest with their children.
