The Division of Hematology/Oncology

Within the Division of Hematology/Oncology, comprehensive care is provided to more than 1,600 children and adolescents each year. Approximately 180 new oncology patients are diagnosed annually and more than 50 blood and marrow transplants are performed. We treat over 250 patients with sickle cell disease and more than 200 patients with hemophilia or thrombotic abnormalities. We evaluate and follow approximately 500 patients with hematologic or immunologic disorders. We also care for more than 70 Fanconi anemia patients within our Fanconi Anemia Comprehensive Care Center. In total, there are more than 12,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 admissions each year.

All inpatient care for hematology/oncology patients is consolidated within one state-of-the-art hospital floor, featuring three separate lounge areas for families. There are 24 beds for the care of cancer and blood disease patients, and 19 beds for patients undergoing blood and marrow transplants. We have expanded our outpatient clinic facilities to include 14 exam rooms and two isolation rooms.  There also is a 10-bed Day Hospital unit for extended outpatient treatments, including chemotherapy infusion and transfusion services.

Cincinnati Children's is a national leader in the development of new pediatric cancer therapies and blood and marrow transplantation regimens. We are a leading institution in the new National Cancer Institute-funded National Developmental Therapeutics Consortia, including the Pediatric Phase I Consortium and the New Advances in Neuroblastoma Therapy Consortium. Our commitment to experimental therapeutics includes a major expansion of the faculty for basic and translational cancer research, and new facilities, including a Phase I/Advanced Therapies Clinic and a Radiopharmaceutical/Radioimmunoconjugate Treatment Center. Additionally, we have developed a state-of-the-art gene therapy program within Experimental Hematology.
