Who to Refer for Cancer Risk Assessment?

The Hereditary Cancer Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides some guidelines on who to refer for a cancer risk assessment. These are adapted from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines.

Colon Cancer

  • Man or woman with colorectal cancer diagnosed under age 50 years
  • Clustering in family of colorectal cancer
  • Colorectal
  • Endometrial
  • Ovarian
  • Duodenal / small bowel
  • Stomach
  • Sebaceous adenomas / carcinomas
  • Multiple colorectal carcinomas or more than 10 adenomas in same individual
  • Family with known hereditary syndrome associated with cancer with or without mutation

Breast Cancer

  • Woman with breast cancer diagnosed under age 50 years
  • A woman with two primary breast cancers (bilateral disease or 2 ipsilateral primary tumors)
  • A woman with breast and ovarian cancer
  • A woman with a family member with two primary breast cancers or with breast and ovarian cancer
  • Clustering in family of breast cancer
  • Male breast cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Adrenocortical cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Brain tumors
  • Leukemia / lymphoma
  • Ashkenazi Jewish individual with breast cancer at any age
  • Any woman with ovarian cancer
  • Woman with family history of one or more ovarian cancers on same side of family
