What to Expect at a Cancer Risk Assessment

You can expect to spend about 45-90 minutes at your first appointment to the Hereditary Cancer Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  The time will be spent with a genetic counselor and a physician who are experienced in genetics and cancer risk assessment.

During Your Visit

  • A genetic counselor will ask you questions about your family's history of cancer.
  • You will learn about your risk for developing cancer in the future.
  • You will learn about the risk for your family members to develop cancer in the future.
  • Mangement, screening and cancer prevention options will be reviewed.
  • You will learn about the pros and cons of genetic testing and will consider if genetic testing may be appropriate for you and your family.
