Tips to Reduce Stress
Hospitalization and surgical procedures can be a new and difficult experience for you and your child. Here are some things you can do to calm and comfort yourself and your child during this difficult time:
- Take care of yourself
By taking care of yourself you are better able to care for your child. - Take slow, deep breaths
Research shows that talking slow, deep breaths helps your body and mind feel more in control and it helps calm you. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. - Relax you muscles from your head to your toes
While you are taking deep breaths, raise your shoulders and let them relax. Gently roll your head. While sitting, stretch and flex your legs and feet. You will begin to notice that your muscles will start to soften and relax. - Be positive during this time
Think things like, "See, I was able to take care of things today." Or, "We will handle what is next." We often show appreciation to our children and it feels good to appreciate ourselves. - Send good thoughts to your child while you wait
Many people find it soothing to send good wishes or pray for their child during surgery.
