Diabetes management at home

Diabetes can make going to a birthday party, playing in a soccer game, or merely having a sleepover an overwhelming task for a child. The Home Health Care pediatric nursing staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center recognizes the challenges children and their families face with diabetes.

Diabetes Basics

Diabetes is a condition where sufficient amounts of insulin are either not produced or the body is not able to use the insulin that is produced. According to the National Diabetes Education Program, about 150,000 school-aged children and adolescents have diabetes. Approximately one in every 400 to 500 children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes. Reports and studies indicate that Type II diabetes (typically thought of as adult diabetes) is becoming more common among children and adolescents. If left unmanaged, diabetes can have lasting serious complications.

The treatment for diabetes involves insulin, diet, exercise, stress management, blood glucose and ketone monitoring. For children diabetes can pose many challenges. Education and cooperation of the entire family is essential.

Diabetes Home Health Care

The Home Care pediatric nursing specialists from Cincinnati Children's can help. Diabetes requires planning. Our nurses can spend time with families developing a plan that works for them.

The nursing staff will educate your child and your family about medications and how to regulate them. The nurse will help you learn to identify and treat hyperglycemia (too high blood glucose level) and hypoglycemia (too low blood glucose level). Because diet and exercise are essential to balance, your nurse will help you plan for both.

Facing a chronic illness is difficult for both your child and your family. Our nursing staff recognizes these challenges and can help with coping strategies.
