The Schubert-Martin Inflammatory Bowel Disease / IBD Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides comprehensive, individualized care for pediatric patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Our unique diagnostic abilities and pediatric expertise make Cincinnati Children's a leading regional referral center for complicated inflammatory bowel disease / IBD management.

Pediatric Expertise

Our commitment to children of all ages is a strength of our program. At Cincinnati Children's, we are dedicated to optimizing care for the young children and teens who struggle with inflammatory bowel disease daily. They face unique challenges including:

  • Growth and bone health issues
  • Hormonal development
  • Self-management of diet, medications and flare-ups

Because of this, pediatric patients often need more aggressive treatments than adults. Our team can best treat these patients since we specialize in pediatrics and deal with these issues on a regular basis.

We recognize the differences and challenges of treating young adults, particularly those between the ages of 13 and 18 when self-management becomes so important. And we have the expertise and resources to care for younger children.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment

Our team works to enhance the lives of children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease. Ongoing therapy can be expedited by the close interaction among the members of the center -- all at Cincinnati Children's -- providing better treatment, saving time and lowering stress for patients and their families. We focus on all aspects of caring for those diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, including the overall quality-of-life issues facing our patients every day.

One of our strengths in providing integrated care involves having team members from multiple disciplines working together, including:

Surgical Partnership

At the Schubert-Martin Inflammatory Bowel Disease / IBD Center, we are privileged to partner with surgeons at Cincinnati Children’s who specialize in the correction of pediatric colorectal disorders. Richard Falcone, MD, and Jason Frischer, MD, are two of the surgeons who work closely with our team to treat patients with IBD when surgery may be necessary.

Collaboration with Referring Physicians

At Cincinnati Children's, we believe the best care is provided when primary care physicians and families partner with our specialists to make medical decisions. Continuity of care is essential, including complete and timely communication with referring physicians about recommendations for care.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research and Clinical Studies

Due to the extensive laboratory and patient-based research being conducted at Cincinnati Children's, patients seen at the IBD Center receive care and treatment based on the latest scientific knowledge. Our current research efforts in this field include:

  • Basic science studies related to growth hormone resistance in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease
  • A national trial of Humira for Crohn's disease in children
  • Promoting Adherence to Crohn’s and Colitis Treatment (PACCT) Study, a randomized controlled clinical trial testing the effect of family-based behavioral intervention to improve adherence, disease severity and quality of life in pediatric patients with IBD
  • Investigation of potential mechanisms of cytokine-dependent growth hormone resistance in mouse models of colitis and in children with Crohn's disease
  • Pediatric IBD North American Collaborative Research Group, a pediatric research network consisting of seven medical centers conducting clinical trials for pediatric IBD
  • The Pediatric IBD Collaborative, a multicenter group of pediatric gastroenterologists establishing a database to follow a group of children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease for the purpose of observational clinical studies
  • International Pediatric IBD Genetics Consortium, a group studying genetic mutations that can lead to suscep- tibility to inflammatory bowel disease in order to predict the best therapies for patients.

Evidence-Based Care

Pediatric evidence-based care guidelines have been developed at Cincinnati Children's by a team of gastroenterologists, clinical effectiveness physicians, and evidence-based experts working together with patients and families. These guidelines are used by our care team and also help pediatricians provide the best possible care to inflammatory bowel disease patients. Our goal in developing them was to set a standard of care that is evidence-based, efficient, family centered and safe.
