School Intervention Program

Overview

The School Intervention Program helps kids and teachers. The School Intervention Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has been helping sensitize schools to the needs of children with cancer since 1979. As one of the first of its kind in the country, the program has received national and international recognition for the innovative efforts in reintegrating children with cancer back into the classroom.

Serving Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders

We offer the program to students actively receiving cancer treatment and those students who have completed treatment, yet might be experiencing difficulties in school in the academic or social areas. The program has expanded to include not only children with cancer but also children with other blood disorders. The School Intervention Program is targeted to students from age 3 to 22 years old.

Working with Schools

In-services and training sessions for teachers, staff and peers are provided for schools to assist them when working with the student with cancer and other blood disorders. Developmentally age appropriate medical / educational materials are implemented in the classroom. The School Intervention Program works with the school and the child's family to provide home-bound instruction and tutoring as needed.

The School Intervention Program helps kids and teachers. The School Intervention Program is also involved with special education issues for the child experiencing learning difficulties. The School Intervention Program actively participates in the individualized education plan (IEP) or 504 Plan and collaborates with the school and family to provide a learning environment to meet the goals of the learner with special needs.
