The Safety Resource Center and Injury Free Coalition have teamed up with the Get On Board with Safety campaign, a national child injury prevention initiative to educate parents, caregivers and consumers nationwide about the changes they can make to prevent unintentional injuries in and around the home and on the road. The campaign is led by Dorel Juvenile Group USA's Safety 1st brand and the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). Injury Free Coalition for Kids at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a multi-disciplinary group composed of hospital personnel, including physicians, nurses and paramedics as well as community leaders and residents. The organization was formed in 2000 to prevent unintentional injuries among children living in at-risk neighborhoods through a variety of community-based interventions. Our program is modeled after the national Injury Free Coalition for Kids started by Dr. Barbara Barlow at New York's Harlem Hospital in 1984. Cincinnati's Injury Free Coalition for Kids has combined Dr. Barlow's model of community partnerships and input from Avondale residents to produce the following plan to help reduce injuries to Avondale youth:
- Education of children and parents about risky behaviors
- Changing the physical environment of the community to create safer places for children to play
- Providing safe, structured out-of-school activities that revolve around sports, technology and cultural learning
We have committed our first five years of service to the Avondale community, Cincinnati's largest African-American neighborhood, where we have created a number of physical and social interventions. Since our origination, Injury Free Coalition for Kids Cincinnati has built six playgrounds and a football field in Avondale, has headed up CincyAfterSchool, a city-wide after school program within the three Avondale elementary schools. We have also partnered with other local organizations in the programming of a Friday night youth basketball league, a Safety Resource Center in the Emergency Department of Cincinnati Children's and a donation of 200 computers to local schools.
