Research study focuses on international adoption
By Camila Vieira
The International Adoption Center (IAC) at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is building a research program to examine the health status of international adoptees. Already, the center's research has gained national recognition and has made an important impact on the care of internationally adopted children.
University of Cincinnati graduate student Camila Vieira, the IAC and the Division of Genetics are conducting a research study of the prevalence of genetic conditions and birth defects in international adoptees. The research study will survey adoptive parents who have utilized IAC services between November 1999 and December 2005 in order to estimate the number of children diagnosed with a genetic condition and / or birth defect. The impact of the diagnosis on families will also be studied.
As a parent who has experienced the international adoption process, you are a valuable source of information. The results from this study will be beneficial to future parents who are considering international adoption by educating them with accurate numbers on the prevalence of genetic conditions and birth defects in international adoptees and how a medical diagnosis may impact family dynamics.
