Human Milk Donation Program
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is a collection site for the Mother’s Milk Bank of Ohio which is located in Columbus, Ohio. The MMBO, which is a service of the Grant Medical Center, is a member of the Human Milk Bank Association of North America and provides pasteurized donor breast milk to premature infants, and infants and toddlers with life threatening conditions whose mothers cannot provide human milk. In 2006 the Center for Breastfeeding Medicine received a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities to cover the start up costs of becoming a depot site, and we have maintained the facilities since then. Mothers with expressed milk in excess of what is needed by their own infants are screened by the milk bank prior to donation. Donated milk is collected at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and sent to Columbus where it is heat pasteurized and handled according to HMBANA standards. This pasteurized donor milk is then available to infants and children in need through physician prescription. Milk donors do not receive monetary compensation.
