Clinical Services
Clinicians in the Center for Breastfeeding Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are available as a resource throughout the entire breastfeeding experience. We provide support on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.
Outpatient
The outpatient Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic is staffed by two board certified pediatricians who are also board certified in lactation, as well as a nurse lactation consultant. The clinic is designed to assess and treat both mother and infant at the same visit and both will be scheduled and registered as patients. Visits typically last about two hours.
Outpatient lactation consultation services include:
- Prenatal education
- General assessment of lactation for mothers and breastfeeding infants
- Evaluation of breast milk intake during a feeding
- Feeding strategies supportive of lactation
- Assistance with increasing / decreasing milk supply
- Management of nipple confusion or breast refusal
- Breastfeeding help with premature infants, multiple births and babies with complex health problems
- Nutritional management of slow weight gain in the infant
- Referrals for breastfeeding equipment and supplies
In addition, breastfeeding medicine physician services include:
- Treatment of nipple / breast infections including mastitis and thrush
- Evaluation and management of low milk supply
- Treatment for engorgement, plugged ducts and sore nipples
- Evaluation of tongue-tie and frenotomy
- Management of complex breastfeeding challenges
Vists can be scheduled Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling 513-636-2326. The clinic is located within the Pediatric Primary Care Center on A1 at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Burnet campus.
Inpatient
Lactation consultation is available to infants hospitalized in any area of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. An individualized plan of care based on the needs of each mother and infant is implemented by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, dieticians and lactation professionals. Hospital grade breast pumps are available for mothers to express breast milk for their hospitalized child if he or she cannot feed directly at the breast. Discharge follow up for unresolved breastfeeding problems is available in the Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic.
