World-Class Liver Disease Expertise
The liver transplant surgeons at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are among the most experienced and skilled in the world, regularly performing procedures often considered to be too high-risk or complex for other programs.
- Cincinnati Children's is one of only a few centers that perform liver transplants on children under 10 pounds.
- More than half of the patients at Cincinnati Children's who have received liver transplants are under age 3.
- The Pediatric Liver Care Center is recognized as the second transplant center in the United States to perform segmental liver transplant.
- Our liver care team performs whole liver transplantation and technical variant liver transplantation. (Technical variant liver transplantation includes a living related donor, reduced-size and split liver transplantation.)
A strong research emphasis, including active programs in all areas of liver disease research (basic science research, clinical research, translational research and outcomes research), keeps the Pediatric Liver Care Center at the forefront of new and improved treatment approaches.
Our commitment to research has led to findings that have significantly reduced the length of hospitalization and medication utilization, which has reduced the cost for the overall treatment of patients.
Unsurpassed Approach to Liver Care
The Pediatric Liver Care Center team is composed of experts from many disciplines at Cincinnati Children's who believe that a multidisciplinary and family-centered approach to care leads to the best outcomes for children with liver disease.
Multidisciplinary Focus
The Liver Care Center team has a long history of working together. The team is fully committed to a collaborative approach to care that is customized for each patient. Our team truly functions as a family. All team members feel valued and are dedicated to collaborating on every phase of evaluation and treatment.
Our goal is for families to experience seamless integration of care from Liver Care Center medical and support staff who coordinate and communicate each child's medical evaluation, recommendations and follow-up care.
Family-Centered Care
The best results occur for patients when the family, the referring physician and the medical team work together. The Pediatric Liver Care Center team establishes a course of treatment that is individualized and takes into account the concerns of both the family and the referring physician.
Cincinnati Children's is committed to ongoing communication with the referring physician and the family and encourages questions and concerns to be shared throughout the process.
Patient and family education begins at the first visit when families meet with every single member of the transplantation team, and it continues throughout treatment.
Centralized, integrated scheduling of visits, tests and other arrangements allows your family to effectively utilize your time so you can focus on the care of your child.
Family-centered care involves parents as active participants in the care of their child. Family-centered care also means health-care professionals don't separate the family's medical issues from their emotional and developmental issues.
The Liver Care Center team offers the skill, compassion and knowledge to address each patient's and family's emotional and psychological health needs. Team members are available any time for advice and problem solving.
Transplantation is a lifelong journey. The Pediatric Liver Care Center stays in touch with patients for years to monitor their progress. And, the staff partners with the referring physician in providing support for each patient's lifelong care after the return home.
