Liver Transplant Outcomes / Quality Measures

Patient Survival at 90 Days

The Pediatric Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center closely monitors every patient following a liver transplant. Several factors, however, can impact a patient's survival following a liver transplant, such as:

  • Age of the child at the time of the the transplant
  • How sick the child was at the time of transplant (as indicated by PELD / MELD score)
  • Whether or not the patient had previously been transplanted
  • The primary disease / reason for the liver transplant

From January 2002 to December 2006, 90% of the patients receiving a liver transplant at Cincinnati Children's lived 90 days after their transplant procedure. Among the past 25 liver transplants, 87% have survived 30 days after their transplant procedure.

91% of patients receiving a liver transplant lived 90 days after their procedure.

Patients are considered high-risk for a liver transplant if they are:

  • Less than age 2 at the time of transplant
  • UNOS Status 1 at the time of transplant
  • Retransplant candidate
  • Multi-organ transplant
