Liver Transplant Outcomes / Quality Measures

Deaths While on Waiting List

Patients who come to the Liver Care Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and are in need of a liver transplant must first be thoroughly examined by the medical team. Following the examination, several steps are required before a child can be listed by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the national waiting list for a liver transplant.

Reasons why children die while on the waiting list:

  • The first organ didn't work, requiring the child to go back on the waiting list
  • The child's condition has unexpectedly deteriorated, putting the child in urgent need of a liver transplant
  • The number of children waiting for an organ far outweighs the number of organs available

Deaths on Waiting List Over Time

Here's the trend of child deaths while on the waiting list for a liver transplant, since 1996.

Children must be thoroughly evaluated before being placed on the waiting list.
