Infections with Liver Transplants

One type of complication that can occur after a liver transplant is infection. Infections often occur from the immunosuppressive drugs that are prescribed to prevent organ rejection. These drugs lower a child's immune response, allowing for a risk of infection.

The Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center treats infections with antibiotics or possibly additional surgery.

If an infection occurs after the initial transplant admission, the child may have to be re-admitted to treat the problem.
