Liver Transplant Outcomes / Quality Measures

Patient Survival at 3 Years

The Pediatric Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center closely monitors every patient following a liver transplant. Every patient and family is discharged from the hospital with a complete post-transplant care plan that includes regular follow-up visits to the Liver Transplant Team.

From 2000-2003, the Pediatric Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's has seen an 83-92% patient survival rate at three years:

The 91% of patients transplanted with a liver in 2002 have survived.

Factors Affecting Patient Survival

Several factors can impact a patient's survival following a liver transplant, including:

  • Age of the child at the time of the the transplant
  • How sick the child was at the time of transplant (as indicated by PELD / MELD score)
  • Whether or not the patient had previously been transplanted
  • The primary disease / reason for the liver transplant

Patients are considered high-risk if they are:

  • Less than age 2 at the time of transplant
  • UNOS Status 1 at the time of transplant
  • Retransplant candidate
  • Multi-organ transplant

Since the chart above reflects 3-year patient survival rates for a liver transplant, data isn't yet available for subsequent years.
