Liver Transplant Rejections

More than 90% of liver transplant rejections are effectively treated without the need for retransplantation.

One type of complication that can happen after a liver transplant is rejection, which occurs in 35-60% of patients. This means that the child's body is having trouble from how the body's immune system has reacted to the new liver.

The Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center treats liver rejections by:

  • Prescribing immunosuppressant drugs
  • Changing or adjusting medications
  • New transplant

If rejection occurs after the initial transplant admission, the child may have to be re-admitted to treat the problem.
