Liver Transplant Frequent Questions

How Long Will it Take to Get a New Liver?

Mom and Child

A mother and child.

Getting a liver that is right for your child is one of the most unpredictable steps of the transplant process. The Pediatic Liver Care Center team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center works with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), a national organization that coordinates the process of obtaining and distributing donor organs for transplantation.

Cincinnati Children's cannot determine when a liver will become available. When a liver is available, it must be a match for your child. We will work with UNOS to make sure that the donor liver is the proper size and blood type, and that the liver is healthy and free of infection.

Sometimes children wait only a few days or weeks before receiving a donor organ. If a living-related donor is not available, it may take months or years on the waiting list before a donor organ that is a correct match is available. During this time, your child will have close follow up with his or her physician and the liver transplant team at Cincinnati Children's.
