The long-term prognosis for patients with a spinal tumor has improved with recent developments in tumor resection and spinal reconstruction. The greatest factor in achieving a positive outcome is getting treatment immediately after diagnosis.

The Musculoskeletal Tumor Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center treats many patients of all ages who have primary or metastatic spinal tumors, which can occur at any level of the spinal column. Cincinnati Children's surgeons use the latest surgical and medical treatments available to help maintain quality of life and extend survival.

Minimally invasive techniques such as kyphoplasty for the spinal metastases and osteolytic tumors are used to stabilize and strengthen collapsed vertebral bodies. Endoscopically assisted spinal tumor excision can be done to remove a damaged or diseased vertebral body with less intensive care and shorter hospitalization required.

En bloc resection is often the optimal surgical treatment for primary tumors and some metastatic ones. Vertebral reconstruction with autograft bone, allograft struts, cages or plates is frequently needed to reestablish mechanical strength in the spinal column.
