Overview
The Division of Neonatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, part of the Perinatal Institute:
- Manages the clinical care of neonates
- Teaches fellows and residents
- Conducts research regarding neonatal disorders and their prevention
Clinical Care
The Regional Center for Newborn Intensive Care (RCNIC) at Cinicinnati Children's is one of the largest, most sophisticated intensive care units for newborns in the United States.
The Division of Neonatology provides 24-hour clinical coverage for three Cincinnati area Level III Newborn Intensive Care Units (at Cincinnati Children's, University Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital) and seven Level II Special Care Nurseries. We also provide medical leadership for all 10 nurseries and work collaboratively with local physicians and advanced practice nurses to significantly decrease neonatal mortality in the region.
The physicians from the Division of Neonatology also manage a growing volume of normal newborn care at nine Cincinnati area hospitals. The Division of Neonatology provides:
Follow-up clinics at Cincinnati Children's and Good Samaritan Hospital, staffed by Division of Neonatology physicians, care for babies who have ongoing and often complex medical and developmental needs. These clinics also serve as a resource for primary care physicians in the community who assume the management of these infants.
Research
The research programs in the Division of Neonatology encompass a broad array of both clinical and basic science research areas, but each program is aligned with our singular vision to advance care for all newborns. In our division, research is used to improve patient care. As part of the Perinatal Institute, we work closely with the divisions of Pulmonary Biology, Developmental Biology and Perinatal Biology. By fostering these collaborations between clinical and basic scientists, we have developed knowledge and therapies that have helped countless children.
The research interests of the Division of Neonatology can be grouped into four broad areas:
