The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is particularly renowned for its expertise in the evaluation and treatment of children with acute and chronic glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome. We provide care to more than 2,100 inpatients and 2,800 outpatients each year.
The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension works closely with the divisions of Pediatric Urology and General and Thoracic Surgery, providing a multidisciplinary approach to the care of children with congenital anomalies of the kidneys and the urinary tract. Extensive facilities are available for the care of acute and chronic renal failure.
Specialized Programs
The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension provides:
- Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and training and support of home dialysis
- Highly-specialized procedures such as hemoperfusion, hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration for critically ill children
- An active kidney transplant program, in cooperation with surgical subspecialists; transplants are coordinated when necessary, and hospital staff are deeply committed to a comprehensive post-transplant patient care program
Achievements
- The kidney transplant program at Cincinnati Children's began in 1965 and has performed more than 400 transplants.
- Cincinnati Children's performed the first kidney transplant in Ohio and one of the first in the nation.
- Cincinnati Children's contains one of the largest pediatric dialysis programs in the country.
