Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Division
The Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Division -- the MIND -- at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center uses SMART (Stereotactic Minimal Access Resection Techniques) Surgery to treat abnormalities in the brain, such as tumors, cysts, vascular malformations and hydrocephalus. This innovative surgery results in shorter hospital stays and operative times when compared to conventional neurosurgical procedures. As a result, our patients return to school -- and their favorite activities -- faster.
Many of the procedures and operative tools were developed at Cincinnati Children's. During the past decade the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Division, under the direction of Dr. Kerry Crone, has been an international leader in the development and education in minimally invasive neurosurgery.

Pioneers
Division Director Kerry Crone, MD, helped pioneer neuroendoscopy. He and a group of 10 neurosurgeons from all over the world got together to explore how an endoscope might be used to more easily and effectively treat their patients. Today, Dr. Crone is one of the few surgeons in the world considered an expert in endoscopic neurosurgery.
Recently, Dr. Crone also developed a new procedure to operate on previously inoperable brain tumors. You may view the press conference about this new procedure, which was broadcast live on March 12, 2004.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Division at Cincinnati Children's has the only pediatric neurosurgery program in the country with a focus on transitional care for teens and young adults with complex neurosurgical issues. This focus allows our staff to effectively care for these patients, while helping them transition into the adult health care system. Preparing for the transition is very important, and the Neurosurgery Transitional Assessment Program has established protocol to ensure a smooth transition so our patients receive the best possible continuity of care.
