Cutting-Edge Excellence in Pediatric Neurosurgery
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Division at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric neurosurgery program in the region. We provide care to more than 1,000 patients and 3,500 outpatients each year.
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Division provides 24-hour inpatient care, timely outpatient consultations and internet-directed inquiries (neurosurgery@cchmc.org) for all phases of oncologic (cancerous), developmental, functional, traumatic and vascular neurosurgical disorders. The division works closely with referring physicians and other medical and surgical specialties to provide comprehensive care to patients and their families.
About Our Team
The Neurosurgery Division is comprised of three pediatric neurosurgeons: Kerry Crone, MD, Karin Bierbrauer, MD, and Francesco Mangano, MD. Their support staff includes highly knowledgeable registered nurses and nurse practioners, as well as a physician assistant, residents and fellows. A dedicated 40-bed neuroscience unit provides unparalleled pre- and postoperative care for infants, children, teenagers and young adults.
History of the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Division (MIND)
The Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Division (MIND) is the result of years of ground-breaking research conducted by Dr. Kerry Crone and colleagues from around the world as they explored the use of an endoscope to treat a variety of neurosurgical disorders that at the time required doing "major" surgery. Thanks to their efforts, some procedures can now be accomplished with minimal blood loss, pain and scarring. Additionally, Dr Crone pioneered the use of Stereotactic Minimal Access Resection Techniques (SMART) to remove deep-seated tumors that were previously thought to be inoperable.
State-of-the-Art Operating Suite
The new Cincinnati Children's neurosurgical operating suite, which opened in November 2006, is the only pediatric operating suite in the world to contain an MRI scanner. This intraoperative MRI in combination with an integrated neurosurgical microscope and stereotactic guidance system make this suite one of the most technically sophisticated operating rooms for children in the world.
