Ophthalmology

Welcome to the Division of Ophthalmology

We treat injuries to the eye

The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center specializes in diagnosing and treating all types of eye disorders, including those systemic diseases that also affect the eye, in children.

The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology serves as a referral center for all significant eye diseases and trauma in the Tri-state area. Pediatric care ranges from routine eye exams to very complex diagnoses.

Medical Programs

The Division is dedicated to several programs of clinical expertise, including:

  • Inpatient consultation provided for high-risk neonates
  • Evaluations for cancers of the eye
  • Management of eye trauma

Eye examinations utilize state-of-the-art technology for procedures such as:

  • Ultrasonography
  • Fundus photography (to photograph the back of the eye)
  • Electrophysiologic testing of the retina and optic nerve

Abrahamson Pediatric Eye Institute (APEI)

The Abrahamson Pediatric Eye Institute (APEI), housed within the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, supports an in-school vision-screening program to help detect preventable causes of blindness in preschool children. The APEI also supports ongoing clinical research initiatives to investigate new and emerging pediatric eye treatments for various types of eye disorders.
