Medical Programs
The Division of Ophthalmology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati collaborate together to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of retinoblastoma in children.
The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Cincinnati Children's also conducts screenings for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in high-risk neonates. These programs are essential for improving the quality of life in children who have these conditions.
Retinoblastoma Treatment Center
James Augsburger, MD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati, has established the Retinoblastoma Treatment Center. This Center is a collaborative entity between the Divison of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Cincinnati Children's and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Augsburger specializes in ocular oncology (cancers of the eye) and has a special interest in retinoblastoma, the leading type of eye cancer in children.
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screenings in Premature Infants
Constance West, MD, Michael Yang, MD and Dean J. Bonsall, MD, conduct ROP screenings in low birth weight, premature newborns at area hospitals. This program aims to:
- Develop an awareness of the importance of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screenings, treatments and interventions for newborns with ROP
- Develop training programs for pediatricians and others about proper ROP screening
