Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy

Helping Children, Adolescents and Young Adults Reach Their Full Potential

Therapy for children and adolescents can increase independence, mobility and social adjustment.

Who can benefit from a referral to OT and PT?

It's never too early to begin occupational therapy and physical therapy services at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Early therapeutic intervention helps stimulate normal development, reinforces a healthy self-concept and promotes emotional maturation. Therapy for children and adolescents can increase independence, mobility and social adjustment.

  • Delayed or uncoordinated fine motor development (i.e.,use of hands for drawing, cutting, writing, grasping, eating, constructing)
  • Delayed or uncoordinated gross motor development (i.e.sitting, crawling, walking, jumping, kicking, running)
  • Sensory processing difficulties, such as oversensitivity to touch, movement, light and sound

Family-centered Care: Partners in Treatment

Our therapists believe strongly in the power of family encouragement and involvement. We encourage those close to the child to regularly attend therapy sessions. Instructing and educating the child and their family is as important as the therapy the child receives. It is the family that plays the most important role by following through with therapies at home on a daily basis.

We value the personal information that you can share with us about your child. The exchange of information allows us to better know each child while building a strong sense of trust and partnership between the family and therapist.

Occupational therapy and physical therapy treatment is many times carried out in a gym-like atmosphere among other therapists and patients. This promotes learning and interaction with others while providing a motivating environment for the child. In addition, most therapies require a large, open environment to allow movement and to accommodate large equipment. If you desire a more private, confidential environment, please speak with your therapist to see if we can accommodate your request.
